In today’s retail landscape, theft, fraud, and unauthorised entry pose ever-evolving challenges. Traditional CCTV and human monitoring, while essential, often react after an incident has already occurred. What if your security could spot a threat the moment someone steps through the door, alerting staff before a theft or unwanted action unfolds?
That’s the promise of Argus Vizion, our new live facial recognition service designed specifically for retail environments. Below, we walk through how it works and what it delivers to make its deployment safe, lawful, and trustworthy.
Here’s a high-level view of the system flow in a retail context:
Camera feed & face detection
Standard security cameras stream video into the system and capture facial images at entry points
Watchlist matching & scoring
The face template is compared (in real time) to a secure database of known threat identities (e.g., previous shoplifters, banned individuals, persons of interest). A match above a threshold triggers an alert.
Alert & response
When a match is flagged, a discrete alert is sent to store security or management for human verification. If there’s no match the data is deleted almost instantly.
Verification
If there is a verified match, staff can engage in preventative engagement and log the record for audit purposes.
Governance
All data is centrally governed through ASEL’s Security Operations Centre.
The biggest drain on retail profit margins is shrinkage, losses through theft, internal pilferage, fraud, or damage. Studies show that a large proportion of shrink is due to shoplifting.
Argus Vizion helps reduce shrink by:
Deterring would-be offenders who realise the store is protected by real-time facial alerts
Enabling staff to act before goods are taken
Providing data to analyse patterns e.g. repeat offenders, hot spots & time-of-day trends
Retail environments sometimes face aggressive and anti-social behavior, confrontations, or banned individuals attempting to reenter. By identifying flagged individuals early, staff are better prepared, potentially defusing tension before escalation.
When incidents do occur, Argus Vizion offers a clean timeline: the exact moment a match was triggered, which cameras saw the individual, and how staff responded. That makes investigative follow-up more efficient, whether for internal review or law enforcement cooperation.
If opting for our Gold level service ASEL assumes full data controller responsibility, removing compliance and reputational risk from the client.
Here are a few illustrative examples of how Argus Vizion might be used in retail:
High-value jewellery store
With historically high theft risk during peak hours, the store loads its watchlist with known offenders. As a flagged individual enters, staff rotate closer to high-risk displays before any attempt is made.
Clothing chain in a busy shopping centre
During late-shopping hours, Argus Vizion monitors multiple entrances and detects if the same individual (on a banned list) attempts to reenter after being escorted out earlier.
Supermarket with recurring internal shrinkage
The system helps management correlate matching incidents with time-of-day, enabling targeted staff deployment in troublesome aisles, reducing losses and tightening internal processes.
Flagging disturbingly aggressive behaviour
In some settings, watchlists may include persons previously banned for aggressive or threatening behavior. Early alert gives staff a head start to defuse or call security.
Retail is under pressure from many fronts, supply chain disruption, online competition, labour costs, and rising theft. Security solutions like Argus Vizion represent a step-change: moving from passive observation to active, intelligent protection.
But technology alone is not enough. The success of such systems depends on trust. Customers must feel safe, not under surveillance; staff must feel supported, not monitored; regulators and privacy advocates must see clear safeguards, auditability, and accountability.
With the right design, governance, and ethical guardrails, Argus Vizion isn’t just a security tool, it becomes a differentiator: a promise to customers that their experience is safer, their data is respected, and your retail spaces are protected intelligently, transparently, and humanely.
