Bradford BID Officer Praised for Heroic Intervention in Bridge Incident

Quick thinking and bravery from Affy, one of our Bradford BID Patrol Officers

One of our dedicated Bradford BID patrol officers, Affy, has been commended for his quick thinking and bravery after preventing a man from taking his own life during a distressing incident in a neighbouring town.

While off duty and on his way home, Affy noticed a visibly upset man with his partner near a bridge. Trusting his instincts, he approached to offer support only for the situation to escalate rapidly when the man attempted to lunge over the bridge railing.

Without hesitation, Affy acted decisively, grabbing hold of the individual mid-lunge and holding on tightly, despite the intense struggle that followed. During the incident, the man lashed out, scratching Affy’s arms, which began to bleed heavily, though in the adrenaline of the moment, he didn’t notice.

With the help of members of the public, Affy was able to pull the man back over the railings to safety. He then remained with him, calmly talking to him about his family and encouraging him to think about the people who care about him, helping to de-escalate the situation until emergency services arrived.

Affy has since received medical attention, including precautionary injections and antibiotics, and is recovering well.

This courageous act highlights the vital role our officers play not just in providing visible safety and reassurance, but in being human, compassionate, and ready to act when it matters most.
