The project in brief

The Viking Link interconnector is a major electricity cable that connects the power grids of England and Denmark. Work on the project began in 2019, the subsea cable installation was completed in July 2023, and the entire project became operational on December 29, 2023.

ASEL solutions provided

  • Solar bastions
  • Solar-powered speed cameras
  • Access control cabins
  • Solar-powered time lapse photography
  • Internal time lapse cameras

How ASEL keeps the Siemens Energy Viking Link Protected

Viking Link is a 1400 MW high voltage direct current (DC) electricity link between the British and Danish transmission systems, connecting at Bicker Fen substation in Lincolnshire and Revsing substation in southern Jutland, Denmark.

The project involves the construction of converter sites and installation of onshore and offshore cable in each country, which are then connected to the substations.

Viking Link is approximately 765km long and allows the exchange of electricity between Great Britain and Denmark. This interconnector enables the more effective use of renewable energy, access to sustainable electricity generation, and improved security of electricity supplies.

Construction began in 2019, and we have been working on this site since 2021, providing:

  • 12 x solar bastions on site covering the compound, platform, access road and haul road
  • Solar-powered speed cameras
  • 2 x access control cabins
  • 2 x external solar-powered timelapse cameras – images are taken every 5-10 seconds and put into a monthly edited video
  • 4 x internal time lapse cameras to track the progress of the works
  • Gateman controlling access to and exits from the site

ASEL access control cabins at the Siemens Energy Viking Link

ASEL’s access control systems deliver complete oversight and management of site entry, allowing only authorised individuals to enter. By doing so, they help minimise security threats, enhance regulatory compliance, and simplify workforce operations.

At Viking Link, two access control cabins featuring half-height turnstiles and facial recognition technology were installed. These also have thermographic cameras built in to measure the temperature of site personnel and visitors, with software to process real-time information, including:

  • Timesheet management
  • Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS)
  • Validity of competencies
  • Apprentices
  • Local labour
  • Distance travelled to site

ASEL time lapse cameras at the Siemens Energy Viking Link

Our external solar-powered time lapse cameras use Evercam CCTV software to capture images every 5-10 seconds and create a monthly edited video, documenting the progress on the Siemens Energy Viking Link.

Similarly, we have installed 4 internal time lapse cameras to help track works on this project. Together, our time lapse photography showcases the transformation of the Viking Link, offering a crystal-clear overview of site activity and structural developments.
