The test match season is upon us.

And with England v India getting underway this week, I thought it appropriate to clarify just why cricket is the greatest sport in the world, in case anyone was unclear…

Cricket, you see, isn’t just a sport. No, no. It’s a grand theatre.

Sometimes a comedy of errors, at other times an epic suspense thriller. But always a social spectacle.

Cricket is often all three rolled into one.

In a world that often insists on speed and instant gratification, cricket offers a refreshing reminder to slow down and revel in the art of anticipation.

Cricket teaches us that life’s most delightful moments often come wrapped in long innings, unexpected twists, and the quiet hilarity of watching grown adults attempt both a perfectly timed swing and, shortly thereafter, dignity in the face of ignominy.

The game’s beautiful paradoxes – the meticulous strategy juxtaposed with sheer unpredictability – remind us that sometimes, the best plans are the ones that go hilariously awry.

One of the funniest cricket stories is ‘Rahul’s beer.’ In this story our batsman, Indian cricket cap KL Rahul, is having a very bad time. He is missing every ball and has come perilously close to being out for a duck several times.

Becoming more and more irritated as time passed, as the bowler walked back Rahul turned to the wicketkeeper and said “Phew… What couldn’t I do with a bottle of beer.” The wicket-keeper replied, “Hit it with the bat?”
