It’s the middle of the night and the intruder alarm at your school has just activated. It might be a faulty sensor, a break-in, a burst pipe or a broken window. Someone has to go and find out.
At many schools, that someone is the caretaker, the site manager, the business manager or a member of the senior leadership team. They get out of bed, drive to a dark and empty site, and walk in without knowing what they’ll find. Then they’re expected to be at their best when the school day starts a few hours later.
It happens often, but it shouldn’t.
Relying on staff to respond to out-of-hours alarms causes problems that school leaders don’t always see until something goes wrong.
It puts people at risk. Your staff aren’t trained or equipped to confront intruders or assess a potentially dangerous site alone at night. Asking them to do it creates a real personal safety risk and a duty-of-care concern for the school.
It disrupts the next working day. A 2am callout means a tired member of staff the next morning. When the same few people take every call, the strain builds up.
It leaves gaps. What happens when your keyholder is on holiday, off sick or simply doesn’t answer the phone? An alarm without a response leaves your premises and assets exposed.
It lacks a proper record. After an incident, you need to know what happened, when, and what was done about it. That’s hard to capture when the response was an exhausted colleague doing their best in the dark.
ASEL’s Keyholding and Alarm Response service takes that responsibility away from your team completely. When your alarm activates outside school hours, one of our SIA-licensed security officers responds instead. We manage the incident from the first alert until the site is secure again.
Here’s what that looks like in practice.
Secure keyholding. We store your keys securely off-site in line with BS 7984, the British Standard for keyholding and response services. Your keys are protected, controlled and available when they’re needed.
Rapid response. ASEL operates the North East’s largest dedicated mobile response fleet, with an average response time of approximately 35 minutes, so help is never far away.
Full site checks. Our officers carry out internal and external inspections of your premises to establish the cause of the activation and check for signs of intrusion, damage or other issues.
Escalation and contractor coordination. If we find a problem, we deal with it. We liaise with the police, arrange locksmiths and coordinate emergency boarding so your site is made secure without anyone from your team having to be called out.
Digital incident reporting. After every callout, you’ll receive a detailed digital report with timestamps and photographic evidence. You’ll know exactly what happened and what action was taken, which is useful for governors, insurers and your own records.
We designed this service with the people who run schools in mind, including headteachers, school business managers, and estates and facilities teams. You already carry a great deal of responsibility. Out-of-hours alarm response doesn’t need to be part of it.
With ASEL handling your keyholding and alarm response, you can be confident that your premises, assets and people are protected around the clock, and your staff arrive the next morning rested and ready for the school day.
Every school site is different. The best first step is a conversation about your premises, your current arrangements and where the risks lie.
